The link between sleep and brain health

Getting enough sleep is important to lowering your risk for heart disease, stroke, and other major health problems. Poor sleep can put you at higher risk for Alzheimer's disease, dementia, depression and anxiety, and memory issues. Find out more about how sleep affects your brain on House Calls: Real Docs, Real Talk.

Why getting enough sleep is good for your brain

Good sleep improves your mood, focus, learning and memory. Poor sleep not only negatively affects brain function, but it can also put you at higher risk for brain related diseases such as stroke, Alzheimer's disease, dementia, depression and anxiety and memory issues. Dr. Rebecca Gottesman, chief of the stroke branch at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, joins House Calls to talk more about the health risks of not getting enough sleep, and what to do about it.
